EXPLICIT MENTIONS OF RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT BELOW

HERE ARE A COUPLE OF TIPS TO KEEP YOU SAFE FROM SEXUAL ASSAULT:

ME TOO

SAFE AND POWERFUL IS HOW YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE, TAKING OUR DIGNITY, WE'D REPLY 'YES SIR'.

A THRUST, A SLAP, A GRAB, A SPIT!

NOT KNOWING WHY WE LET YOU DO IT.

FOR YEARS YOU'VE TAKEN WHAT YOU THINK IS YOURS, OUR ONLY TWO JOBS: BEING FUCKED AND DOING CHORES.

PERSUADED TO BE SILENT AND FORCED TO BEND,

HOW DO WE MAKE THIS HARASSMENT END?

WE THOUGHT WE WERE ALONE, WITH NO HELP TO FIGHT, BUT THEN THOSE FEW WOMEN SHOWED COURAGE AND LIGHT, HAND IN HAND WE CAME OUT TO EXPOSE, THOSE MISOGYNISTIC ANIMALS IN THE EXPENSIVE CLOTHES.

SO RUN LITTLE MEN AND BE CAREFUL WHO YOU GRAB, THESE BEAUTIFUL FEISTY WOMEN HAVE A NASTY LITTLE STAB. YOUR TIME IS UP, YOU'VE LOST ALL YOUR POWER.

A NEW WAVE IS BORN, A STONG INDESTRUCTIBLE FLOWER.

#1

Trust your instincts- a lot of the time if you are getting a weird vibe it is probably for a reason so just get the fuck out of the situation, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

#2

Make sure you are prepared -when you go out just make sure your phone is fully charged, you have money on you and also there is no harm to carry a rape alarm or some pepper spray.

#3

Keep it to yourself-61% of victims know their attacker so if you are going out just don’t publicise it on your social media.

#4

Stick together -if you are at a party with your friends make sure they know where you are and If you go anyway that you make them sure they know where you are going.

#5

Don’t let your drink go - keep your eyes on your drink all times and get a new one if you have left it for a while. Some people are weird and want to spike you.

#6

Eyes peeled - if you are walking home at night because you don’t have enough for an Uber (we have all been there) make sure you aren’t listening to music.

STILL READING? WE APPRECIATE

A study in which rapists and harassers were questioned on what they look for in potential victims says that their targets are usually girls who are listening to music, as they are less aware of their surroundings and who have long hair, braids or a ponytail because it gives them something to grab onto.

If you are feeling nervous call a friend or put your keys between your knuckles so if necessary you can attack. The keys will feel like a knife and cause the attacker to step back, giving you time to run. There are also tracking apps you can get that your friend can follow to make sure you get home safely. If you stop for more than 5 minutes it informs your friend and if it continues a further 10 minutes calls the police.

Since 1993, sexual assault has declined by 60%.
So by raising awareness of how to stay safe we can help make that number continue to lower.

SPIKED DRINKS

Freshers week. New city, new people. Pressured and pushed by SU into buying welcome week wristbands. Second night - The ‘Circus Party’ began at my hall bar. My eyeliner wings for the first time perfectly matched. Thrown into a bar compacted full of unfamiliar faces, eager to meet who would be living with me. Introductions, what’s your name? Your course? Where are you from? I bought my second vodka and lemonade. I was approached by someone, discussion erupted, I placed my drink down on the side of the bar. Mr.Brightside started to play, dancing and singing to every reminiscent word. Not more than 5 minutes later, I picked up my drink off the bar again. 10:30PM. Freshers being ushered by last years residents to the U1 transport hub.

Packed onto the bus. Chants resonated from window to window. My speech slurred. The bus jolted to a stop, elated to get off crowds ran down the hill to College Green. 11:00pm. My mind begins to go fuzzy. Tired and woozy. Conscious of making a bad impression on new friends, I try to remember how much I drank. I can’t concentrate. I try my best to focus. Two vodka and lemonades. How was I this disorientated? Confused and isolated. My fingers begin to feel numb. I pass out on the floor and get trampled on. A guy from my hall drags me off the ground, unstable. This is where my memory begins to fade.

Earsplitting. My head ached. I adjusted my eyes, I was in my bed. No recollection of the events that had unfolded. I’m told paramedics are on the way. ‘We think you have been spiked and recommend that you go to A&E’. In the back of an ambulance, still oblivious and slightly unaware. Spike. I trace back my steps as the paramedic writes up her report, I only put my drink down in the hall bar. A place of supposed safety and security. Paranoia takes over. Frozen. Rape date drugs were put in my drink, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by people who noticed my state and got me help. All it takes is a second, be careful.
